Last night, around 10:30pm , the boyf and I heard a cat yelping outside the window. At first I thought it was just our kitty being a jerk, but I had a bad feeling*, so I went outside to check for kitties.
I found a skinny 'lil lady cat, collarless and alone, who ran up and purred her way into my arms. I took her upstairs to the spare bedroom and we set her up with food, water, and litter. She's obviously friendly with people, pretty underfed, and not missed running around without a collar near midnight. So I'm putting up Found signs, and I want to contact a shelter...a no-kill shelter. How do I do that? I don't want to just leave her outside again or hand her off to animal control people who'll put her to sleep... *I was talking with the girls who live across the way (both about 10 years old) as they played with my puppy. One of the girls mentioned that she had a cat, until her mom got fed up and "threw it out the window, but I think it's still alive, maybe"(they live on the 1st floor) I asked if she was serious. She was. WTF, people.

My kitty has a teeny microchip in his neck with his name, address and phone number. I got the impression it's pretty standard. Your kitty might have a collar after all!

Yup Heather's kitty 7 of 9 is real sweet.
My brother adopted 2 puppies recently from an underfunded shelter (he's in NC) things are so bad , and with so many found critters, that each week they place 15-20 animals in the kill room (a gas chamber) and eliminate in all in the room at once, the staff member told them it was a noise that takes a while to get used to I can only hope to God- she was giving them a sob story so they’d take the extra dog- but I don’t think so |

it's highly unlikely she's microchipped, but just in case, you might want to stop by a vet's office and have them check. it's fast & easy & they'll do it for free (maybe call ahead to make sure they have a scanner).
because the shelters are soooooo overcrowded, it might be hard to find a spot for her at a no-kill. call/e-mail a few to find out (red door and tree house, as mentioned, are great, and also harmony house), but be prepared to be given advice on how to adopt out the animal yourself, via craigslist, petfinder, etc. 'course there's a chance you've just found yourself a new pet! |

once you feed a cat twice you legally own it

Oh, lordy no. I'm NOT naming her just to keep myself from keeping her, and she doesn't enjoy Cormac's (my dog) attention at ALL.
We called Tree House and they're checking for room. Here's hoping for a good result. but WTF who throws a cat out a window offstage, seriously.

People are so messed up where animals are concerned sometimes. It's really disgusting. Hopefully the shelter will take her.
The people who originally had my cat apparently decided he was too "wild" and dropped him by a dumpster outside of a Taco Bell in Indy. It was dead of winter and they had declawed him when he was younger, so he had no way to defend himself. Thankfully, the son of a woman who helps trap/ neuter/ release feral cats and rescue strays saw what happened and got his mom to pick the little fellow up. They looked after him until they could find a permanent home. Three months later, I happened to be looking for a feline roommate and that's how I got him. |

PAWS Chicago is a no kill place with really nice kitties and dogs. I don't know how they acquire new animals, but it's worth calling.
