Republicans and conservatives have suddenly been crying foul over the choice of PBS's Gwen Ifill as debate moderator.
She has been the bipartisan chosen moderator since August of this year. Before Obama's nomination, before McCain's and before Biden and Palin. ..But suddenly Ifill has a 'conflict of interest' and therefore shouldn't be trusted. Because she has been writing a book called "Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama" Now, Ifill has made no secret about the upcoming book she has written and is releasing, and in fact it has been public knowledge since July of this year. None of Ifill's critics have even read her book, as it has yet to be released. But let's not let their obvious ignorance detract from their knee-jerk outrage and indignation. Yes, conservative pundits everywhere already have their collective panties in a bunch, saying we've been suddenly 'blindsided' by this black woman who 'clearly has a liberal bias' and will no doubt do everything she can to subvert Sarah Palin during the VP debate. So, just so you know going into the debate; if/when Sarah Palin makes herself look like an uninformed idiot up there? Guess who the right-wing pundits and Republicans are going to use as their scape-goat in the ensuing days. 'That terrible Gwen Ifill person'. Last edited by Edison; 10-02-2008 at 05:29 PM. |

I hate them sometimes.
In one way, I can understand what they're saying. If there was a woman who had some fairly deragatory things about the democrats and then was writing a book called "Age and politics in the year of McCain", well.... But then on the other hand, like you say Edison, everyone knew this book was coming out and they didn't have any problem with it before, and no one's even read it yet and blah blah. But now they've made it so Gwen is going to be REALLY aware of what's she's saying and they're going to be able to use this to their advantage no matter what happens. If I had the choice, I would love a brand new moderator, just so I don't have to listen to the bitching tomorrow morning. Hixx |

Every moderator has bias. Any good one you find has already made up their mind about who they're voting for. The only difference here is that we have some evidence to guess which side this moderator supports.
It doesn't change the fact that a moderator has to set that aside to work the debate. If anything, she'll be harder on Biden to show her impartiality.

Thread derail:
Check out the Huffpost's snarky little sibling. They were able to obtain the table of contents for Gwen's new book. http://www.236.com/news/2008/10/01/v...g_a_1_9245.php |

You know what?
Fuck the Repubs on this one. Does anyone here know what Jim Lehrer's political leanings are, based solely on his performance last week? No. Because he did his job. As moderator of a debate. Just like Gwen Ifill will. The times alloted for candidates to speak is regimentally controlled. So are the questions. Which they get, ahead of time, to prep for. Each candidate gets an equal number of "lead questions" and they BOTH get equal face time on camera. It couldn't be more equal. Ifill doesn't have a whole lot of wiggle room to interject her opinions - if she even wanted to. This is pre-debate posturing by the Republican base to prep us for the very real "crash and burn" that they think that their veep candidate just might bring to the stage. They're laying the tracks now for the "Palin fucked up because Ifill loves Obama" train that they anticipate that they might need to drive through town, if tonight is a disaster. Which it won't be. Because it's so carefully regulated and rehearsed by both candidates that the only spontaneous moments are what they do, when the other guy is speaking. And even then, it's just facial expressions and cryptic notes to themselves. Gwen Ifill is a valid moderator that the Repubs have had months to object to. Recognize this for what it is - Pre-emptive damage control. And if you're so inclined throw it on the pile of reasons to dislike the Repubs. (As if you need another one.) Fucking Republicans. COB out...

Gwen Ifill is a great choice for moderator. In fact, she was great when BOTH parties approved of her months ago. Why the clamor now? Because now she's a liability... she has the chops to actually probe and question beyond both candidates comfort zone.
Bottom line: She was approved months ago. So what has changed? Ah, the people she would question. That's why they're upset now. Also, I've seen Ifill on Meet the Press and she's great.

I think the VP debate will end up being much ado about nothing.
Palin isn't going to rally anybody new to her with a stunning performance, and if she comes up looking stupid the GOP will continue to flog the 'gotcha' journalism pinata they've been hitting since the convention. Or, they will talk about how she kicked butt and really rose to the ocassion - Just Like She Did in the State Tourney! Baracuda!!! - and an increasingly small number of people will care. The only big story that can come out of it is if Biden gets wound up and seems angry. Look at the pres. debates: the story that's lasted the longest from that is McCain's lack of eye contact. As much as we would like it. There isn't going to be a knock-out punch, I think. McCain is going to keep grinding until the end. Obama's in control now, he just need to keep it together. |
