Friends, I had the opportunity to catch a preview of Gutenberg: The Musical at the Royal George this past weekend.

It. Was. Phenomenal.

It had a great, well-received run in New York, and is now being produced in Chicago by John Pinkard (who also produced the Hannibal Lechter show Silence: The Musical! in its New York run) with Chicago-based actors.

The show is an absolute riot. There are lots of musical theater in-jokes (if you are familiar with the disastrous Dance of the Vampires you will love this show), but the performances are so sincere and the comedy so genuine that you'll love it even without a theater background.

It has an open run, but it's best to catch it now with the original cast.

The synopsis:

In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers' audition for their new project - a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg

With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their silly historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract - fulfilling their ill-advised dreams.

It's actually not an open run...at least not yet. It's only running through July 27 the website says. But everything else here is right....it's amazingly awesome!
