So what'd ya see?
the only shows I got to see were at the Apprentice Stage. And they were all fantastic! I was actually very impressed with the groups, all very respectful and excited and all did very well.
So you go...

Josh and Tamra rocked! Their scenes were so surprising, it was an excellent breath of fresh air.
And Code Duello was great. I've seen them before and was interested to see how it played the second time around. But their characters are great, and the comedy comes from a very natural place. Quite enjoyable.

Saw about twenty minutes of each of these shows...
Bassprov
Boom Chicago
Josh and Tamra
Baby Wants Candy
And all of the Boom Chicago alumni sets (w Ike Barinholtz, Seth Myers and other famous television celebrity types).
Favorite thing that I saw... the grandfather scene from "The Josh and Tamra Show". Tamras' BIG choices were funny, but I am blown away by Josh's control over his puppets. He had one of them doing physical work, folding his improv underwear and putting them away in his dresser drawers. Honestly, his puppet people do better physical work than some living improvisers that I've seen and that's amazing to me.
Favorite part of the festival was hanging out with the good lads from "Dirty Water" at the Lincoln Tap Room. And then going to the Jerkalert afterparty with Josh and Tamra and Josh's suitcase full of characters, which he has to lug around with him everywhere. Just like "Carrottop"!
Another good memory was sitting up in the empty balcony of the theater with the videographer, eating a festival supplied Chipotle burrito and watching the BOOM CHICAGO improv sets. It was nice to be done with my job for the festival and just relax and enjoy it a little bit.
Good times!
Another fun CIF

My lightest CIF ever.
The only official CIF acts I "saw" were Chewties and Stubbs. I wrote "saw" as I was doing tech for Chewties and the lightbooth at Stage Left is pretty obstructed from the stage. Managed to catch a bit of Duchess.
However, I got to see three special shows that I really wanted to catch--Quartet, WeirDass and Trio.

Angie, did you get to see Spontaneous Combustion on the apprentice stage? They were last, they were from Denver. How'd they do? I coached them but I was over at the Park West.
I loved Josh & Tamra as I am genetically coded to do. Dasariski I loved, I've never seen them before. Razowsky & Clifford was fun as always. Baby Wants Candy did a bang-up job - my kids sang "Put your pants back on, you creepy motherfucker" all day on Saturday, thanks Dassie.

International night was a beautiful night. Who needs to understand the language you're speaking when you're that physical and expressive?

I was just writing the same thing when I got interrupted and you beat me to it!
I had such a blast that night. All of the shows were awesome.
I was really moved by watching the Japanese group, though, because the culture, language, everything is so different, and yet, we're all trying to accomplish the same thing with improv. They were so fun and cute, and that last story they told was so beautifully done.
Sigh. Improv made me happy this weekend.

As far as shows went, I mainstaged it up with the Razowsky & Clifford/Dasariski/Bassprov show on Friday, and UCB on Saturday. All great.
I also was the only Chicago-ite to take the weekend workshop, with Craig Cackowski, Rich Talarico, David Razowsky, and Susan Messing. I was surprised to be the only local boy, but I met some cool folks from Denver, NYC, KC, Norway, etc ... Learned a lot, too.

Hiccups and Pick Ups was easily my favorite show because they just made it look so easy.
I hate it when people see shows and hear the suggestion and don't think it relates to the show they saw. H&P had this great bit of going to the audience for suggestions throughout, mad libs style, so the audience was helping build the show the entire time. Very fun.
Oh yeah, and viva la Heineken Players!

Did anybody get to see Cross, Ross & Tubbs? I've seen them several times here in LA, but I wanted to find out how the CIF show went.

I saw it...I'm good friends with "Ross" and I might be biased but I thought it was excellent. Started off a teeny bit slow but settled in and was funny and energetic throughout. Couple of real standout scenes...good stuff.
