My thread about not using moderating powers got locked in under 24 hours.
I wish I could just talk about this with the moderators so Hendo and EdO's long standing sexual tensions and frustrations didn't interfere. I think it's a valid discussion that gets lost under these vendettas.
But now that it's locked, there's a thread that went 7 pages is considered "done" and everyone who was a jagoff there is going to continue to be a jagoff other places. Nothing has been "fixed." It's just that a thread is done for today.
In the end, moderators, this board is what it is, rather than what you want to make it. I repeat my challenge - I dare you to stop moderating. I dare you to stay hands off unless it's gone so far that there might be legal action taken as a result of a post.
This isn't about whether EdO or Hendo are jerks (they are) it's about just letting people post and letting the board become what it is. You can't make people be passionate about talking about tv shows and new forms - artists are passionate about what they're passionate about. Sometimes, that's really, really annoying.
And also, there is no possible way you can be fair in the slightest. You say you're against "meanness" and "bullies" but the truth is, you're going to cut a break to people who you know, or who you think are funny, and other people will be held to higher standards. It's the way it's always worked. And that leaves other people feeling undervalued and eventually leave. You know when your friends are joking. You don't know when strangers or anonymous posters are joking - and the result is that strangers and anonymous posters don't enjoy posting as much. And without those people, who I'll call "new people," you get the same four people fighting about the same stupid stuff.
You can disagree, but I think you'll increase the value of your message board to the community as a whole if you accept that snarkiness and pettiness are part of having a message board. Yes, it's annoying, but if you want a website where there's posts you don't find annoying, then start a blog and write it all yourself.

didn't Tyler, Telfer and Griggs already answer you? Several times?
So, what? If they don't do it YOUR way, they're wrong?
Now who's the bully/asshole?

Hendo, I think the conversation goes beyond a single response from adminstrators - it's a discussion that I'd like to see ongoing rather than a single post of personal position.
And i never claimed to not be a bully or an asshole.
However, my goal in this situation is to have a conversation about the culture of this board, and the last post turned into whether you or Ed is more annoying.
By the way, the answer is this: You're both annoying, but it's pretty fascinating anyway because at this point we're all pretty sure the two of you got drunk and fucked at least once.

In your dreams, Dave.
You remember... you ate four slabs of Carsons' ribs, threw your back out, took a bunch of Vicadin, and had homo-erotic dreams about the Black Sheep.
It was every Saturday for 3 years.

Actually, though, Dave, I think the last thread did answer this: " I dare you to trust the people who post on your board to slap the people down who deserve it and police themselves."
As we saw, it didn't work. Someone can just be generally negative and rude towards a group, and if someone else steps up and tells them so, it's a personal attack and turns into bickering. And it never ends.
People being rude for the sake of being rude is one of my personal pet peeves, and when I see it, I pursue it. I'm sure the fact that I am stubborn as hell and won't let things drop peeves other people.
It's a vicious circle. It just goes around and around.
That's what makes it vicious. And a circle.

Also, and this is just my opinion, but if you disagree with how the admins and the people that own the site run it, why don't you start your own?
In other words, after all these years of telling everyone else how to run their boards, isn't it finally time to put up or shut up? And if not that, then just publically admit you're a rabble-rouser for no other reason than you like getting everyone all worked up?

I'm with you man..
I don't like overly moderated boards either. But as a group it seems like we need to make this place good for the whole, rather than part.
My only disagreement with your original post is how you talked about how others would "shout down" assholes or bad threads, i think that scares people off just as much as harsh moderating, then, the board is run by the alphas, which is what we had last time, which, didn't fly so well.
Steve put me on here, because he thought it would be easy peasy, and i've always wanted to learn coding and all this message board admin stuff, like the running of boards and keeping them up and speedy. I didn't bargain for all of this.
I'm not the right person for the job, it's pretty obvious.

When McAvoy was running the board, he was very much about the whole "laizzez-faire" approach. Gilley used to argue with him relentlessly until finally, at Tyler's birthday party, I believe, McAvoy announced he was going to just turn the whole damn thing over to Gilley to teach him some sort of lesson. I forget what the lesson was.
So that's what no moderation gets you. It gets you a board where things get so shitty that both McAvoy and Chin walk away and Gilley takes over.

Mark - my original point is that having three boards is boring and counter-productive. I'm not interested in running a board, and don't think it would be a good thing to add number four.
Speedy - you're making the same mistake Biddle did. I'm not saying, "This is how you get rid of assholes." I'm saying that assholes are inevitable. But the board will see them post and make their own opinions. I also think hopefully comedians will use comedy to make fun of assholes. It's part of the job description. Did you see how I made fun of Hendo earlier? That's how it works.
This is not a suggestion on how to make everyone be nice. This is a suggestion to make this board more interesting, and how to get more people to post on it. And the answer to that is to just let people post. The assholes will always be there, and almost always the people complaining about assholes are assholes themselves. So who do you ban? Everyone?
You wanna get rid of the bickering on this board, you'd have to ban about half the people who are posting regularly. That includes me. But it also includes a bunch of you guys who are reading this and think, "No, we need moderators."
Finally, Hendo - As for me being a "rabble-rouser," I've never claimed to be anything else. I like making people discuss things, and I really enjoy making fun of people who deserve it. So do a lot of comedians. Comedy is not nice, pleasant, gentle people discussing things they love. It's ugly, mean, hostile and very often, true. Just like reality. So let's just let reality happen on this board.

Did you pay attention to the lesson of the bee board? No moderation gets ruined by a few jackass (users), heavy moderation gets ruined by a few jackass (moderators). No matter what you do, the jackasses will take over.
I dare you to not give a fuck about the runnings of silly improv message boards. This is nothing but a place to chat with friends...supposedly about improv...but...whatebs.
Regardless, quit being a blowhard. The bosses here are doing their best.

I'm spending the majority of time not moderating, but trying to figure out how to make it play a rad guitar solo whenever someone posts. Being an admin ain't all moderation. It's mostly guitar solo, that's what i've learned today.

Quoted. For. Truth.
Dr. Chin closed the asylum. Now all the nuts are running wild in the CIN streets.
Prior to the breakout, I was getting positive repped by a variety of people who were entertained and amused by the things I posted here.
I'm a wonderful person, Dave. I'm a happy, well-adjusted, easy-going friend to animals. I love walks on the beach, poetry, art, and biking. No matter what any of these deeply dysfunctional and unfortunate individuals say about me, I am secure in the knowledge that I am a warm and caring person who embraces life with his own personal flair!
I hold no malice towards these people. I understand that not everyone is comfortable talking to a therapist or trying different medications. Some are just too proud. And so, they carry on another day, taking. Taking, Dave...not giving. There's a difference.
Let me tell you a little story about an uncle of mine that might help you to understand this situation and your place in it.
I had an uncle named Walter. He was insane. He lived in a psychiatric facility until he escaped one day. While wandering acros the Mass Pike, he was struck by a cement truck travelling at a high rate of speed. Walter was pulverized instantly. It was over for Walter. And yet not for his doctors. They'll have to live with their grief for the rest of their lives.
Don't be a Walter, Dave.
Now, wait...I mean don't be a doctor, Dave.
Something like that.

Dave,
I'm engaging you directly on the point that you're trying to make here...
What do you hope to accomplish with a whole "no moderation" philosophy here? What does it gain for you? For the other users? For the board?
What do you hope to gain exactly?

I'm clearly missing something because I don't understand your problem, Dave. Are you afraid to post things simply because moderators exist? Is it that you post so much shit that gets deleted or locked? Get over it, Dave. Seriously.
One thing you can say about Dave Colon...he's an opportunist. He waited and waited, crouched down in the brush for months. But when someone finally flushed out the loons, he was at at the ready and started blasting.

Gina, all I stand to gain is having message boards be interesting again. . .
My biggest problem is that they've been boring for a really long time. I can live with it if that makes me a dickweed. It would be nice to have a conversation about what the goals and purpose of moderation are. I feel that after several years, the sum effect of moderators has been to make Ed O'Rourke one of the main voices on the CIN despite the fact that he doesn't improvise. There's not a single less asshole. But there's a lot less fun, intelligent posts that people actually want to read.
And I miss the fun of people taking a piss out of each other. Remember "Grow a beard, Jay O'Connor?" Remember shitbag ballcowski?
McAvoy, you have to admit, when the assholes aren't being moderated, people read the boards. When they are being moderated, six people talk about puppies. I'd rather have a ton of people who do improv being chaotic and weird than six people be boring.

Dear Ed,
This is so you...
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
