Turns out I *may have* neglected to turn off my gas service at my old apartment and have been paying the bills of the new tenant for 8 months. Turns out I had a $100 credit on my account from the government, and People's has been eating in to that rather than sending me bills. The credit ran out, and I received my first bill last week.

I'm going to verify that I indeed cut off service to my old place. In the unfortunate chance that I forgot to do this, does anyone know of any recourse I have to getting my money back? Anyone been in this situation?

I was on the other end of this situation once.

My first apt. I lived there for about 9 months without getting a gas bill. Then one day the gas was turned off and I got a bill for $200 bucks.

There's probably something you can do about it.

You can prove that you moved.
If you have your name on where you get gas now that should be enough to prove otherwise You'll have to fax your current rental lease.

I had to go thorough all of this and it sucked.

Good luck.

I'm going through the exact situation right now. Contact the Illinois Commerce Commision and explain your situation. That was recommended to me by the folks at People's Gas.
We can compare notes on how much we are being taken for.
