The most likely answer to this is probably: read a book.

But...

In the interest of making a cheap, unique, and easily-updateable website I was looking at editing one of the templates they give you (or possibly flat-out making my own?). Does anyone do this a lot and want to help a n00b?

I can't say I found the answer to my question, but I did find a quazi-solution that made me happy enough not to care any longer.
