Friends, in the past couple weeks, I have gotten three new albums that I like a whole lot and just thought I'd take a second to recommend.
1) Andrew Bird, Armchair Apocrypha -- rocks a little harder than previous A.Bird efforts, but the songwriting is still amazing and I like that the bigger, richer sound means that he's not content just to re-make The Mysterious Production of Eggs all the time, as good as that album was/is.
2) Brandi Carlile, The Story -- I loved her self-titled debut album, and (like Andrew Bird) instead of resting on those laurels, she really built on that first album and took some risks on this new disc. It's got a mainstream sound, but with definite 70s-California-rock touches (think Eagles or early Ronstadt tinged with Janis Joplin). She and her band write great, catchy anthemic country-rock/rock-country songs.
3) Rosie Thomas, These Friends of Mine -- a quiet, folk-y album with a lo-fi DIY aesthetic and prominent guest starring turns from Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer. Rosie Thomas has a great voice and writes wonderful, gentle, plaintive songs. It's a real short album, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality.
Check these guys out!! And, of course, please add any cool albums you have been listening to recently to this little list.
