Friends, in the past couple weeks, I have gotten three new albums that I like a whole lot and just thought I'd take a second to recommend.

1) Andrew Bird, Armchair Apocrypha -- rocks a little harder than previous A.Bird efforts, but the songwriting is still amazing and I like that the bigger, richer sound means that he's not content just to re-make The Mysterious Production of Eggs all the time, as good as that album was/is.

2) Brandi Carlile, The Story -- I loved her self-titled debut album, and (like Andrew Bird) instead of resting on those laurels, she really built on that first album and took some risks on this new disc. It's got a mainstream sound, but with definite 70s-California-rock touches (think Eagles or early Ronstadt tinged with Janis Joplin). She and her band write great, catchy anthemic country-rock/rock-country songs.

3) Rosie Thomas, These Friends of Mine -- a quiet, folk-y album with a lo-fi DIY aesthetic and prominent guest starring turns from Sufjan Stevens and Denison Witmer. Rosie Thomas has a great voice and writes wonderful, gentle, plaintive songs. It's a real short album, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality.

Check these guys out!! And, of course, please add any cool albums you have been listening to recently to this little list.

I'm only giving these a shot if Bob approves of them first.

I've been listening to Teenage Fanclub's Four Thousand Seven Hundred And Sixty-Six Seconds. It's not new and it's a greatest hits collection, but since I completely missed the boat on these guys to this point it's been a great intro to their stuff. My favorite song on the album is actually a new one, "Did I Say?" That song is 2:30 of harmonious pop awesome.

I meant to respond to this in the Pop Culture forum.

Does anyone listen to rock music any more? Can anyone recommend some good new stuff out there that isn't jangly, oversensitive, and lame?

No. You should continue to listen to the five albums you bought in junior high for the rest of your life.

Battles - Mirrored.
It's rock, but different.
I can't stop listening to this album. It's mathrock from the future and it is crazy-good. They usually do instrumental music, but they added vocals (synthesized) and all sorts of bells and whistles. It is really a great album.

Handsome Furs - Plague Park
It's not the best, but I am in need of a Wolf Parade fix and this hits the spot. It's Dan Boeckner (from WP) and his fiancée, Alexei Perry making weirdo pop with guitar, keys and a drum machine. This video rules:
