I don't and I think I might be one of the only people in her twenties that lives in this city that does not. Is there anyone else that doesn't? I'm I the only one out there? Should I be getting one? What's the big deal?

How do you survive?

I don't own an iPod because it doesn't have a radio function built in. That's important to me, even though I mostly just listen to the recorded music.
Mine is small and looks like a mini-maglight. It holds over 500 songs. I use it like crazy and never go anywhere without it.
This baby set my brother back about $120 during Christmas this year.

I don't have one either, so you're not alone! Its something I'd like to buy eventually, but more important purchases keep popping up (like car repair and plane tickets to improv festivals.)
And to answer Gina's question, I have a car and listen to CD's and the radio when I drive, read on the train and walk/run without music . . . or bring my ancient disc man along.

I have a wee iPod shuffle. It's great. I don't need a big dumb screen and all that space. 1 gig holds more music than I have time to listen to in one sitting, so I don't see the point in carrying your whole collection with you. I just make a playlist on my computer, and that's what I upload into my tiny friend depending on the morning's mood. And it's so small!
I still have a hard time believing people actually watch videos on these things.
...and i still can't believe that technology alows us to view peoples words within milliseconds.

i have been anti-pod lately. i've been through 2 in the past 4 years. why? because they are crazy little jerks. i get the good ones (20GB), and then they die awful little deaths.
the mac nerds don't tell you not to run with the ones that aren't flash drives...even though they make those convenient cases to strap the thing to your arm, but you're not supposed to run with them. gotchya!
i'm getting over it and leaning towards a new, adorable, FLASH DRIVE, NANO!
you own me steve jobs.

ipods infuriate me. The interface was designed by a real stooge. Every play list I ever create gets deleted because I held the one button too long. What is Apple's obsession with having only one button? No thanks. Itunes updates also cause my entire library to become inaccessible. The last iTunes update caused my external music drive to get renamed and everything has to be re-imported every time I try to play it. I hate iTunes and ipods and all their smug, dysfunctional sleekness.
I'll rock the old fashioned discman until I find an mp3 player I like. One with at least two buttons.

I have an older 30gig that Has my whole music library on it which I use on the train, flights and long car rides etc.
I won a shuffle which I just use while working out and I love it. It's small enough to not be in the way. I do however use earbuds with behind the ear clips to keep them from falling out when working out.

The Nanos are great not just because of their size, but because they work with the Nike+ sport kit, which helps us track our runs. Nerdy, but a lot of fun, and educational. My wife has a video one, too, which helps since she flies to Asia 4 times a year ...
I used to run with my old 20GB HD-based iPod, but I was fortunate enough not to have any trouble with it, even though common sense dictated that I should be running with a hard drive. No, instead it was a bottle of spilled Gatorade in my gym bag that did it in ...
But then, I'm a total Apple fanboy ... I can't wait for the iPhone (well, I'll have to, since my Cingular contract has some time).
***To OZONE ... you might want to talk to Apple. Those problems aren't normal.***
Not only do I have one, but it's got the entire greatest hits of BAD CO. on it.
I've alo got The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, The Outlaws, Steve Miller Band, Shooting Star, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, April Wine, and motherfuckin' Thin Lizzie!
Yeah, you guessed it right. I'm a classic rock MONSTER, baby! I'm a hardcore, 74 Chevelle with mag wheels, faded and torn denim jacket, long feathered hair, mirrored shades, baseball shirt from a Rush concert, cassette player in my Pioneer stereo, Jimmy Carter-energy crisis-bicentennial quarter-pulloff cantab-Farrah Fawcett poster OUTLAW, man!!! And don't you EVER.....!!!!! Y'hear me?!

Does anyone else use this? What is it exactly and is it much extra? I like to nerdily track my runs.

I do. It's $30. Don't let anyone try to sell you the Nike+ shoes; they're not necessary. I just use a shoe wallet and have the transmitter secured inside it.
All it is is a transmitter and a receiver. The receiver pops into the dock connector of your nano (nanos only, too--no full-sized or shuffle iPods). You change some settings (like your weight), and pick a "Power Song," which you can turn on at the push of a button for that extra kick at the end of a run (though, mine never worked--my wife's does, though).
You can choose to have an open-ended run, or choose several different pre-set runs (e.g., 10k), or even set up your desired distance. If you choose or enter a specific distance, you can have a male or female voice telling you what mile you're at (you can also turn this off).
After you're done, you just sync your iPod like you normally would. You'll have to sign up at Nike's website, but that's easy. What you'll get is something like this:
http://www.280productions.com/gallery/cpg132/albums/userpics/10001/normal_nikerun.jpg
(that was my first run)
It pretty much does everything, though you'll have to calibrate it yourself, and it doesn't measure heart rate.
Hope this helps.

I love my iPod. I have the huge one with video and everything. I used to have an early one and the battery couldn't last vrey long so I never used it. This one is awesome!
I travel a lot for work and on my last trip I watched a bunch of animation shorts I bought and downloaded. So much better than watching the Holiday or whatever other crap happens to be on the airplane video.
And now with access to Bob Ladewig's music library, my life has changed. I am addicted to music. The combination of Bob and my iPod has really opened up my previously very limited music tastes.
The running thing is interesting. My Ipod is rather big to run with - though on a treadmill, I can just set it down. It never occured to me to own TWO kinds of ipods. But that Nike thing seems like just the thing to get me off the treadmill and outside. I am very geeky about tracking my runs too. It helps keep me motivated. (Says the girl who hasn't run in weeks.)
But still...toys are fun. Sometimes the way I geek out on electronic shit makes me think I'm part boy.

I had a Dell DJ but it died. You could create playlist on the go a lot easier than on the ipods, although I think on the newer ipods you can create them. I just got a BB Pearl and listen to music with it...plus check my email, send txt, surf the web(not as robustly as a if I were on a computer but I'm just on it for the content, not the pretty), take pictures, send the pictures, make Fergies' Glamorous my ringtone, IM, blackberry IM and use it as a phone too. plus, it was free on letstalk.com when I switched to t-mobile. I'm going to ride the train home and play Mortal Kombat against a kid in Taiwan with it.
Ipod...smIpod.
