Workshop Maximum as to insure individual attention: 12 students
When: Mondays 6-10pm Oct. 22nd-Nov. 12th
Where: Sheil Park
&, of course,
What is it?
This workshop is a super-intensive review designed for students that have taken at least three levels at IO Chicago.

CLASS ONE: INTENSIVE review of the basics with Pat O’Brien
Simplifying scenework by discovery instead of invention; using variety and acting to draw the audience in; and drawing on real life reactions to trip over comedy.

CLASS TWO: INTENSIVE review of scenework with Dina Facklis
How to hook in and find your scene; the importance of point of view, specifics and emotion; making your partner look great…plus a simulated audition at the end of class in the vein of Second City tourco auditions.

CLASS THREE: INTENSIVE review II of scenework with Paul Grondy
A deeper exploration of scenework--heightening realistic character portrayal and work on motivations for the actor as well as the characters you choose.

CLASS FOUR: INTENSIVE review of ensemble and Harold work with Holly Laurent
Take those rock solid scenes and create a genius piece. This section of the intensive focuses on how to deconstruct theme not only through great characters and scene work but also through the form of the piece itself. This workshop will focus on group mind, commitment and creativity that prove that the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts.

How do I secure a place in this workshop…
1) Email Dina at dinafacklis@gmail.com by October 10th
2) Arrange getting a deposit of $100 to the group by Oct. 15th
3) Show up on Oct. 22nd for the first class!

Between these four instructors, you will find over 35 years of improvisational experience…

Pat O’Brien moved to Chicago to study improvisation in 1999. He has taught at iO for 5 years, where he also performs with The Reckoning, Armando Diaz, Deathstorm!, and This Day In History. He is also a director for the Second City National Touring company. Recently, he wrote and directed his own play, Mr. 1,000 Miles Per Hour, at Stage Left Theater.

Dina Facklis has been studying improvisation in Chicago since 1994. She has directed and performed for the Second City National Touring Company; her most recent project there was this summer’s celebrated Girls Night Out: Touched Up. She also teaches at and performs in numerous shows at IO Chicago: Armando, Stubs, and Virgin Daiquiri to name a few.

Paul Grondy has been teaching improv for the past 11 years. Since starting at the io theatre in 1991 Paul has performed with the house teams Frank Booth and Carl & the Passions. Paul can also be seen walking on in other people's scenes every Monday night in the Armando Diaz show.

Holly Laurent has taught levels 1-5 in the i.O. Training Center for over 5 years and most recently joined the faculty of the Conservatory program at Second City. She has a special love for group work, long form and the Harold too. She just finished her Masters in Inter-Disciplinary Art at Columbia in Chicago, and you can catch her playing in shows at i.O. such as ShotGun, Virgin Daiquiri, and the experimental and Harold slots of The Reckoning.
