The final episodes of the first, and possibly only, season of FNL are coming down the turnpike. If this show folds after this year, do yourself a favor and watch it on DVD. And if gets a second season, watch the first season on DVD see how it evolved into a great ensemble show.

It didn't get picked up for a second season? Oh my god, I am going to cry. I love this show so very, very much -- best thing on TV in a long time.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, FNL hasn't been cancelled YET.
This is a really great show. I think some people may have been initially turned off because it's A) a show based around a football team, and B) it's a TV show based on a movie, based on a book. I know I was a little hesitant to give it a chance, thinking a third FNL incarnation would blow hard.
But no, it's a really engaging show...great characters and solid, solid acting; and I love the show's documentary-esque aesthetic.
Give FNL a chance. I got hooked during a mini-marathon on Bravo. Maybe they'll have another one with the season finale being this week, be on the lookout.
STATE!

True, it hasn't been canceled, but it hasn't been renewed either.
Supposedly, from the various critics' blogs and industry sites, things look promising for a second season renewal but NBC is waiting until closer to the May upfronts to decide/announce their decision.

From CNN:
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- NBC's "Friday Night Lights" are shining brighter.
A day before the freshman series' season finale, the network on Tuesday ordered six additional scripts of the critically praised but low-rated series.
While this is short of the early second-season order NBC recently bestowed on another struggling rookie, the comedy "30 Rock," the order does strengthen "Friday"'s chances for a return next season.
"Friday" is the second NBC series on the bubble to receive a six-script order this week, following a similar pickup for veteran "Medium" Monday.
"Friday" is an adaptation of the 2004 feature about a high school football team. Kyle Chandler leads the ensemble cast of the drama, which recently won a Peabody Award.
