Big East/SEC invitational set for next season
April 5, 2007
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- The Big East and Southeastern Conference will match up for men's basketball games each of the next four years.
The Big East/SEC Invitational will start in December with four games over two nights at two sites, all televised by either ESPN or ESPN2, the leagues and ESPN Regional Television announced Thursday.
In this year's games, West Virginia will play Auburn on ESPN2 and Georgetown faces Alabama at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center on Dec. 5. ESPN will televise the second game.
The following night, South Carolina meets Providence on ESPN2. LSU and Villanova will follow in an ESPN game.
"The Big East/SEC Invitational provides a great opportunity to showcase two of the nation's premier basketball conferences to a national television audience," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said. "This event increases exposure for both conferences early in the season by creating exciting matchups that will appeal to college basketball fans across the country."
The Big East and SEC have combined to produce four of the last five NCAA men's basketball champions.
"This annual series is going to offer college basketball fans some high-quality December competition in first-class venues," Big East commissioner Michael Tranghese said. "Were excited to be working with the SEC.
"Our schools have some great relationships with SEC schools in basketball and football and this series will only strengthen those ties."
The invitational is similar to the Big Ten-ACC challenge in November.
