How do I gain rank?

I've used a ton of turns, and all I know to do is trade trade trade and increase my hull.

How do I go up in rank and earn points?

but as you increse your entire ship (tech level) your rank and score will go up... also colonizing planets, making interest, battles...all will up your score....
