My 360 succumbed to the red ring of death. All my saved games are toast, aren't they? I've been reading up, and it sounds like they just try to send you another randomly refurbished box without attempting to recover any data. Should I try and get an external HD and save a copy of it somehow? I've never had a console blow up on me while it was actually under warranty before.

Ugh. I bet I have over 100 hours of Oblivion saved on that fucking thing. There has to be a way to back it up.

At least we don't have PS3s.

if it is on your hard drive you should be fine...the only problem is that you have to be connected to xbox live from now on to "authinticate" your xbox profile. the profile is tied to your hardware...so if you switch your hardware...the only way the xbox knows your profile is real is if it can check it against the servers.

that is the big deal with switching to an elite....you would have to same problem

Right, but it's on an internal HD that I'm supposed to send back to Texas. I don't think that's good.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft has a switch they can flip regarding the profile.

Dan, I got the ring of death and was also worried about losing all my stuff. However, that internal hardrive isn't so internal. It's actually snapped on the top of your X-box.

They'll send you a box with instructions as to how to take off your hardrive and send the main unit in.

Awesome! That's what I wanted to hear- thanks Jeff.

yep...none of the xbox hard drives are internal...they snap on the top...it is super easy to take on and off...that is why they are selling the 120....

i heard there is a way to have microsoft "transfer" your autintication to your new hardware...for a while they were very reluctant to do it...and they say they will only do it once (this news when the whole elite stuff hit...) but it this whole fiasco witht he ring...they may be in the mood to do it for these swapouts...

you should ask when you are sending it in...
you would have to wait until you get it back to get it done...but you can get some kind of "commitment" from them before you send it in.

In under two years, you will all either own a ps3 or wish you did. Xbox is the new dreamcast. Mark my words! I am the soothsayer!

I agree. In under two years Sony will be bleeding so much money they'll lower it to a competitive price.

You know what? Buy a PS3. It will suck, and have no games. But that is better than the experience I have had with Microsoft. X-Box Support is beyond mediocre. I'd sooner punt this fucking thing into the lake than deal with those fuckers again.

This same thing happened to me. I got the ring of death about 15 days after my warranty expired. I got transferred through 3 people and they told me it would be $120 to get it repaired. That pissed me off. They put me through to a manager who said he could knock it down to $100. I said I would have to think about it. They gave me 30 days.

I decided to repair it. Called back about 15 days after the initial call and the lady I talked to was great. She said since it was my first time getting repairs done they would do it for free. I asked her about three different ways what I would have to pay to make sure. After that it was a matter of waiting for the back and forth shipping.

So, I got my box. I sent it in. They've had it about a week.

According the website, my repair has been cancelled.

I'm calling them tonight. Microsoft is a joke.

Wow. I can't believe you guys have had any trouble.

They were quick, polite and overly helpful. I got my X-Box back within a week.

Also, you should know, all X-Box 360's are now under a 3 year warranty, no matter when you originally purchased it.

I just called them. After a random loud sigh followed by a hangup, then being randomly transferred and put on hold several times, they told me my console was lost in transit and they would email me a coupon for $20 towards a new console. Then they hung up on me.

I called back, and spoke to a guy who, although he was incredibly rude, was pretty funny.

"That last gentleman you spoke to was Indian, and will probably be laid off. The website is broken, so, stop calling us your console is probably fine."
