I understand the need to promote your show.
I really do.
I don't mind (too) much that sometimes I barely know you.
But PLEASE, for god's sake, use BCC.
I don't want to see a jillion e-mail addresses in the header.
And I definitely don't want tons of folks seeing my e-mail address.
BCC. Love it. Use it.

Sammy -
Can you please paste the email addresses as supporting evidence to your story? Please format them so that there are one per line.
Thanks,
Steve

but i could start giving you the senders' e-mails address.
one e-mail from you and they'll feel pain like they've never felt pain.

Furthermore, do not hit 'reply to all' unless you actually know everybody on the list, and even then it's at best a questionable move.

I disagree. If it's that massive a group email, I find the fault to be with the initial emailer for any reply-all responses-- had the BCC been used, I wouldn't have gotten those replies.

Yeah, well if nobody had ever invented the internet then we wouldn't have this problem at all. Point of cause, not point of opprotunity.

It's not quite the same thing. The internet was not invented to send mass emails, so it's an exaggeration to blame the internet for a reply to a mass email. The BCC function, however, was specifically invented to keep people from seeing/using certain email addresses, so it's not an exageration to blame the initial emailer for causing your email address to be vulnerable.
I'm argumentative! Whee!

the problem with not using the bcc is
a) people getting your address if you don't want them to have it for personal reasons (for example, I know some celebs on a list that would probably not like to be)
b) someone else takes your address, adds them to THEIR list for their show
c) these worms and stuff that get into less careful people's computers can get your address and then...spam
quite frankly, b) is my problem. I don't need 8 million emails about your wacky improv or sketch show flooding my personal and not my not so personal box, especially if someone decides to use one addy over another, and if I don't know you.

I think the real question is:
Why does Sammy think anyone wants his email address?

I kind like it when somebody hits the 'reply all' button acidentily. There is a small bit of mischievous fun in reading notes that arn't intended for you.

Sometimes I am amused to see the other hapless souls included on mass e-mails or evites. Like, I got an invite to see some show involving people I had never heard of, which I personally didn't really mind at all. Not even when I got the 15 or so subsequent changes, reminders, etc. But there were tons of "higher-ups" I guess you could say, on the list. I completely understand promoting your show ... but it was kind of ridiculous how many people they had on there. And people you know they had never had any personal contact with whatsoever. My favorite part was all the people who responded to the evite with "No ... and who are you?" and suchlike.
It was very evil of me to be amused, I know ... ahhh, schadenfreude.
